Patient Insurance Association
The Patient Insurance Association (PFF) is a cooperation body for patient insurers operating in Sweden. The main task is to deal with claims that have arisen with uninsured care providers.
The Patient Injury Act gives patients the right to compensation for injuries sustained in care, regardless of whether the care provider is insured or not. All care providers in Sweden are obliged to have patient insurance to cover liability for financial compensation. If the care provider has no patient insurance the patient can apply to PFF.
PFF is a non-profit association with 18 members. Membership is compulsory and commences automatically for the insurers who market patient insurance in the Swedish market.
PFF’s activities are financed by its members. If a patient is injured by an uninsured care provider the members are jointly and severally liable. In this respect we represent the members. A person who wants compensation is to apply to PFF, which in turn deals with the claim as if insurance existed and pays out patient injury compensation.
The Patient Injury Act gives PFF the right to levy a patient insurance charge on the uninsured care provider and the right to demand the patient injury compensation paid from that provider.
In other respects we work for the members’common interests, for example by providing information on the insurance obligation and investigating insurance circumstances. If we are notified of a claim we find out where the care provider is insured and pass on the notification or, if the care provider is uninsured, we process the claim.
